Mood Board

I have done this because I wanted to look at a range of different magazine covers to get ideas for mine and the genre I can use. This will help with my layout and font, as for each genre of music you can use a different font, to suit it.

Music mind map

I have done this because I am going to produce a music magazine, it may help me with ideas for a genre to cover in my magazine. It may also inspire me a title using some of the words I have found during this part of the task, to make it original but also so it relates to the magazine.

Spider Diagram, Planning my school magazine cover

During the planning of my magazine I created a spider diagram to come up with an idea of what could be the title of my magazine and why I would call it this. I also needed to think about the shape, colour and size of my title. I also needed to take into consideration what my magazine front cover should say about the school, as I would not want to give a bad impression of the school to perhaps new pupils who are coming up from year 6 into their first year of high school.

Teasers

Teasers are important on a magazine as they give the reader some sort of idea as to what the magazine is going to have inside; this particular magazine cover has teasers on both sides of the image. They have used sub headings and then added a sentence underneath; they have used red for the sub headings and then black for the short sentences underneath. by using teasers it makes the reader want to read more about the story, and it will encourage them to buy it if the stories that have been shown on the front, for example if a female was to buy this magazine, and she was on a tight budget she would see the 'cool customer' teaser and want to know what she could get for her money, that would make her look and feel good. The use of alliteration on the cover will also help because it is catchy and easy to remember. Magazine covers would look very boring with just an image on the front so in a way it makes it catch your eye more because most people would prefer a cover giving you hints as to what is inside than just an image and a title. This magazine has a main headline going over the models arm and that is what will stand out as well as the title, also that will suggest what the magazine is about. They have used different types of font for the sub headings and short sentences underneath.
The bright yellow font right at the top of the page instantly catches the eye of the audience as it stands out from the navy blue background. They have used free because everyone likes getting things for free, although they have probably paid the price they would have for the poster with the magazine cost.
It says 'world exclusive' on the front cover to make the reader feel like they are the first in the world to get this information. This would make the customer feel valued to the company.
The word 'massive' is used to make the reader think that there is a lot of new never seen before information to read inside of it.

Magazine Mastheads

The masthead on this front cover makes what the magazine is about very obvious; it is in a large font at the top of the page to make it stand out more. It is over the top of the image so you can see the whole title. Although it does have faded writing over it to suggest it is not only about fashion but is about some gossip.
This masthead is rolling stones this would suggest that it is a music magazine as there is a band with the same name. it stands out on the front page as it is yellow on a dull background.
This masthead is ‘seventeen’ this would suggest that it would be for that age group. It also stands out and is in a big font at the top of the page, it is a bright colour which has been brought forward on top of the image.
The masthead on this magazine cover is ‘vogue’ this suggests the magazine is mainly about fashion and modelling as the meaning of vogue is the prevailing fashion or style at a particular time. The masthead on this magazine cover is a brighter colour than the rest of the magazine cover so it would stand out more, it also suits the colour scheme used on this magazine cover as it is pale pinks and reds, apart from the teasers which are black, but black and red go well together.

Magazine Front Covers

  • The target audience again for this magazine cover is young adults if I saw this magazine in the shop I would think this is for people of around the age of fourteen to sixteen and mainly females due to the fact it doesn’t include sports or anything along that line, which would attract boys.
  • The main feature on this magazine cover is the large image this would attract the eye of teenage girls who idolise Miley or boys who think she is ‘fit’. The masthead of this magazine is ‘billboard’ this could be used to represent a ‘billboard’ which is where you stick information to, this could make people purchase the magazine as they may think it is full of information that could be stuck on a billboard about different celebrities. This magazine contains a barcode on the front cover in the bottom right hand corner, this is so it is easy to see and scan. This magazine has a few cover lines on the front but the main cover line is about Miley Cyrus. This magazine has a strip on it at the top makes you want to buy it as it says on it ‘don’t miss’ this could encourage people to buy it as it tells you not to miss it, miss what??? Is left in the readers head. The colour scheme on this magazine cover is mainly black and a bronze colour.
  • The editor has used a light purple as the background to make the black outfit and Miley stand out more against the light colour.
  • This magazine cover is set out with a main image and then a couple of columns, one on each side and then the main cover line over the top of the main image.
  • This particular front cover only has one main image.
  • The language on the front of this cover magazine is quite formal but has words like ‘tween’ this could be classed as slang. It uses titles like ‘clone wars’ to represent the story. The editor uses a rhetorical question about Miley.
  • Teasers are used on this front cover for example its says ‘what’s really behind the DOJs iTunes inquiry’ this makes you want to read more about it and find out what really is behind it. It does this with a few other stories also to attract the reader’s attention.
  • The target audience for this magazine is young adults you can tell because it has a picture of a well known singer/songwriter that is well known with people of  the younger generation.
  • The codes and the conventions of this magazine are that it has one main image this is usually the main feature in the magazine on this cover the main feature is the picture of Wiz Khalifa. The masthead (title) is the trademark, there is usually only one or two words the masthead on this magazine is ‘Rolling Stone’ this is also the name of a well known band, which could encourage people who are or used to be big fans of the band to buy this particular magazine as they may think it refers to the band. This magazine does not contain any puffs. This magazine uses a buzz word which is ‘special’. On this particular front cover there is no barcode on the front cover but it will be at the back, positioned at the bottom in the right hand corner, near the spine. This magazine has coverlines on the front cover to grab the readers attention and make them want to read about the information that you get snip its of on the front. This magazine cover has a basic colour scheme to make the design more distinctive.
  • Only basic colours are used in the background to emphasise the main image on the front of Wiz Khalifa. Then the main image contains browns and whites to make it stand out and look professional.
  • This front cover is laid out with a few columns down the side on the right and the title going to behind the head of wiz khalifa in the picture, this shows that they have brought the image forward when they were editing it on the computer, but they have left the writing in columns forward as they give information on what is inside.
  • This front cover only contains one main image on the front cover.
  • The language on this front cover contains a range of adjectives. Some of the language on this front cover of rolling stone magazine is slang for example they use the word ‘teen’.
  • Teasers are used on this cover to make you want to buy it, for example on this one there is a ‘featuring’ list and it describes Wiz Khalifa as ‘hip hops rookie of the year’ this would influence people to buy it because they would want to know why he is the main feature.

School Magazine front cover

School Magazine front cover.

This image could be used for my front cover because it meets most of the points, although this is a good image I thought I would re take the photo and have the model looking slightly happier as she looks very serious here.
I have decided to use this image as it has a blank background and is good because it is a medium close up, also it doesn't need to be edited as the lighting is good and the background is plain enough to put my teasers onto.
This image again could be good for a magazine cover that represents the school as it has the school emblem in it and has been taken at the front of the school near the main entrance, although it would look good to have it on the front I cannot use this as it is a long shot and the brief says it must be a medium close up, unlike the image the first image this image does not have a busy background and if it was a closer image it could be perfect.
This image would be good for a magazine cover that represents the school as it has the school sign in it and would show that this particular magazine was specifically to represent the school. This image is not able to be used for my magazine cover as it does not fit the brief and is a long shot rather than a medium close up.
This image is not a very good image to use as it has a very busy background and the pose of the pupil is not very good, plus it does not fit the brief as it is not a medium close up and shows the whole body. Although it cannot be used it shows what I would want my image on the front cover to show, a pupil hard at work on the computer. It is very similar to the first image but taken from a different angle.
It a medium close up of a single student in Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan. To be able to use it I need to edit the background so it has a less busy background to it for my writing to stand out more. I prefer to use this pose because it shows the pupil working on the computer but with a full frontal few. It is also a good image to use as the pupil has a very serious look on her face as if she is hard at work and concentrating. Although this could be a very good image it could also be difficult to use as there is a very busy background, it would be difficult to add teasers onto it because I would have to write over it and it would be very difficult to read, so to use it I would get rid of the background and make it all white or a single colour so I would be able to put teasers which would be able to read.
